Wife Carrying is a fun and lighthearted sport. In Wife Carrying competitions, participants race through an obstacle course while carrying their "wife," combining both serious athleticism and humor. The sport originated in Sonkajärvi, Finland, with the first Finnish Championship held in 1992, and the first World Championship in 1996.
The sport is based on the local legend of Rosvo-Ronkainen. The competition is held annually on the first weekend of July in Sonkajärvi. The main organizers are the Sonkajärvi Entrepreneurs’ Association and the board of Sonkajärvi Eukonkanto Oy.
The Wife Carrying World Championships attract thousands of international spectators to the heart of Ylä-Savo every year. Alongside the competition, the Pitäjänmarkkinat fair and the Tonkkumi World Championships take place.
