Nature in Sonkajärvi Calls – Set Out on an Adventure!
Sonkajärvi offers wonderful nature experiences all year round. Clear lakes, vast forests, and scenic esker landscapes provide the perfect setting for hiking and outdoor activities.
Volokinpolku is the area’s most famous hiking trail — this roughly 30 km wilderness route runs from the Jyrkänkoski ironworks toward Susi-Kervinen, right up to the border of Rautavaara. The trail features lean-tos, campfire spots, and an open wilderness hut at Jussinlampi. There are 6.5 km of duckboards to ease passage through wetlands. The route is of moderate difficulty and divided into stages, allowing you to choose a section that suits you. It can be hiked in either direction, and both trailheads are accessible by car.
Sonkajärvi’s nature destinations offer beautiful viewpoints and peaceful paths. The waterways attract paddlers and anglers, and in winter the area transforms into a paradise for cross-country skiers and snowshoers — with well-maintained ski tracks and snowy forest trails for outdoor enthusiasts of all skill levels.
Whether you’re hiking, cycling, skiing, or simply enjoying the tranquility of nature, Sonkajärvi offers experiences for all the senses.
