Pumpulikirkko is a natural rock formation located within the Pumpulikirkko Old-Growth Forest Nature Reserve and forms part of Tiilikkajärvi National Park. This steep-walled rock fissure, formed millions of years ago, opens into a gorge-like clearing enclosed by vertical rock faces.
On the western wall of the clearing lies a large glacial pothole carved by meltwater during the Ice Age. One side of the pothole has broken open, allowing visitors standing in the clearing to see inside this impressive geological formation.
Pumpulikirkko is one of the most striking natural attractions in Rautavaara. The distance from the Konttimäki parking area to Pumpulikirkko is approximately 1.3 kilometres along a forest trail. Parts of the route can be challenging, but the dramatic scenery at the destination rewards the effort. The ground can be quite wet and rocky in places, so rubber boots or sturdy hiking footwear are recommended.
